Legal Status
The Jersey Heritage Trust is an Association incorporated in Jersey Law registered before the Royal Court on 3 June 1983
Today we operate under the brand Jersey Heritage. We are registered as a charity (no. 411) under the Charities (Jersey) Law 2014. Having statutory responsibilities, operating services that would otherwise be undertaken by Government and in receipt of Government funding we are regarded as an Arms Length Organisations for some purposes of the Public Finances (Jersey) Law 2019. Our Heritage services are provided under a Strategic Partnership Agreement with the Government acting through the Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture. Jersey Heritage receives an annual grant from the Government and undertakes additional fundraising to meet the costs of these services.

The Bailiwick of Jersey’s heritage and culture is special. The purpose of Jersey Heritage Trust is to care for it, promote wide access to it, act as an advocate on its behalf, and bring imagination to telling its stories so that we inspire people to create a better Island for everyone.
Vision Statement
Our Vision is to inspire a virtuous circle of understanding, valuing, care and enjoyment of Jersey’s heritage, contributing to the Island’s unique identity and international relationships, beautiful environment, vibrant healthy community, and sustainable economy, creating a better place to live for everyone, now and in the future.
Jersey Heritage Trust is a registered Jersey Charity, number 411. Jersey Heritage is also a member of the Association of Jersey Charities, number AJC161.
Chief Executive / Chef Exétchuti – Jonathan Carter
Jonathan is Chief Executive of Jersey Heritage Trust. Prior to this appointment in 2003, he undertook a number of curatorial and management roles at the charity from 1989.
A history graduate of the University of Leeds with an MA in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester, Jonathan is principal adviser to the Trustees on all matters of policy and strategy and is responsible for leadership of the organisation.
Jonathan is currently a director of Jersey Community Foundation, a director of Jersey National Park, a trustee of Jersey Public Sculpture Trust and a member of the Academic Council of Jersey International Centre of Advanced Studies.

Deputy Chief Executive and Archives & Collections Director / Députée Tchève Exétchutive et Directrice ès Archives et Collections - Linda Romeril
Linda is Deputy Chief Executive and Archives and Collections Director at Jersey Heritage Trust.
In her role as Deputy Chief Executive, she provides additional support for governance and is also responsible for human resources and IT.
Prior to her appointment as Director of Archives and Collections in 2007, she undertook a number of roles at Jersey Archive from 1997. An English and history graduate of the University of York with an MSc in Archive Administration, Linda is responsible for the selection, care and promotion of the Island’s unique archival and museum collections.
Linda also acts as official Archivist for Jersey, appointed under the Public Records (Jersey) Law.

Director of Curation & Experience / Directrice d'la Tchuthâtion et d'l'Expéthience – Louise Downie
Louise is Curation and Experience Director for Jersey Heritage Trust. Prior to this appointment in 2014, she was Curator of Art at the charity from 1994.
An art history graduate of the University of Sheffield Hallam with an MA in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester, Louise oversees the public-facing side of sharing the Island’s heritage, whether that’s through a visit to a Jersey Heritage site or free-to-access heritage site, an exhibition, event or outreach within the community.
Louise is a member of the Oxford Cultural Leaders alumni network.

Director of Historic Properties and Environment / Directrice d'la Propriêté et d'l'Envithonnement Historiques - Sarah Buckingham
Sarah is Historic Properties and Environment Director for Jersey Heritage Trust. She is a heritage practitioner and Chartered Town Planner, with wide experience working with local authorities, Historic England and as a Planning Inspector in the UK.
Graduating in Egyptology from University College London, she also has a MSc in Historic Building Conservation from Oxford Brookes University. Sarah oversees work to maintain the historic buildings in Jersey Heritage’s care for the use and enjoyment of visitors; to care for the archaeological and built heritage of the island; and to submit a bid for UNESCO Geopark status for the Island.
Sarah is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries, and a heritage adviser to the Antarctic Heritage Trust.
