The position of Trustee is not renumerated.

Role profile
Background:
The JH Board of Trustees comprises a minimum of 8 and maximum of 12 Trustees, which includes a Chairperson, the President (or vice president of the Société Jersiaise) and a Trustee nominated by the Société Jersiaise.
Trustees are appointed for the skills, experience and influence they can bring and the contribution they can make to Jersey Heritage.
The role of Trustee is a voluntary position and Trustees are appointed for an initial period not exceeding three years, which may be subject to re-appointment for up to two further periods of three years, giving a maximum of nine years.
Purpose of role:
Trustees will be required to work together, and with officers of Jersey Heritage and third parties as necessary, to ensure that Jersey Heritage fulfils its Purpose and achieves its mission and objectives.
Corporate Responsibilities of Trustees:
The duties of the Trustees are defined within the Constitution as:
• to uphold the Purpose and values of the Jersey Heritage Trust;
• to promote the Purpose, objects and interests of the Jersey Heritage Trust;
• to act bona fide in the best interests of the Jersey Heritage Trust; and
• to comply with the Code of Conduct.
Trustees have corporate responsibility for ensuring that Jersey Heritage Trust complies with any statutory or administrative requirements for the use of public funds.
Other important responsibilities of Trustees include:
• ensuring that high standards of corporate governance are observed at all times;
• establishing the overall strategic direction of the organisation.
• overseeing the delivery of planned results by monitoring performance against agreed strategic objectives and performance indicators;
• ensuring that the Trust operates within the limits of its authority and in accordance with any other conditions relating to the use of public funds issued by the States of Jersey;
• ensuring that, in reaching decisions, Trustees have taken into account any guidance issued by relevant States Departments;
• ensuring that the Trust operates appropriate employment policies and practices;
• ensuring that the Trust operates appropriate environmental policies and practices.
Qualities and Experience
The Jersey Heritage Trustees are particularly looking for candidates who display the following skills as part of this recruitment process.
Strategic planning & vision
E.g. ability to analysis operating market, identify opportunities and allocate resource effectively long term
Business acumen
E.g. running own successful business, ability to see big picture, financial literacy, solid decision making, aware of impact and consequences
Finance and risk management
E.g. professional qualification experience within sector, external appointments, ability to identify threats and minimize risk
Human resource management
E.g. people management, volunteer engagement & management, reward, employee relations, learning and development etc.
This does not discount applicants who have a wider range of the skills listed below.
• Experience and understanding of corporate governance
• An understanding, appreciation and passion for Jersey’s heritage and culture
• Knowledge of the heritage and cultural sectors (e.g. museums, historic buildings, archives, archaeology and arts).
• Intellectual capacity to grasp issues outside personal experience and to take a strategic view
• Ability to communicate effectively and deal with people at all levels, both internally and externally, including those that are critical of the Trust
• Business acumen and financial awareness, including risk management
• Objectivity, fairness, independence of mind, integrity, wisdom, discretion and good judgement
• Readiness to take and be accountable for decisions
• A good team player
• Ability and willingness to be an ambassador for the Trust and to represent the Trust positively to external audiences
• Possession of a relevant network of contacts together with the capacity to make new links for the Trust
• A comprehensive understanding of the Jersey community.
• The ability to manage the sometimes conflicting interests of conservation, public enjoyment and commercial opportunity.
• An understanding and appreciation of the Island’s heritage
• An understanding of the work of JH, Société Jersiaise and other parallel organisations
• An appreciation of the Jersey political, government and financial frameworks and an awareness of how the world is changing politically, economically and socially
• A broad understanding of the workings, philosophy and ethical framework of a not-for-profit organisation and an understanding of the governance of charities and the duties and responsibilities of Trustees
• No significant potential conflicts of interest
• The necessary time to be an effective Trustee
• Specific expertise in other fields which are relevant to the oversight of the affairs of Jersey Heritage, such as:
• Fundraising
• Retail
• Education and learning
• Legal & governance
• Records management
• Property and estate management
• Change management
• Marketing
• Communications
• Public relations
• IT and business processes
