Built on a tidal islet in St Aubin’s Bay, the Castle dates from the 16th century, but for a thousand years before it was a place of prayer and contemplation as an Abbey and Priory dedicated to Saint Helier. The 12th century Oratory, known as The Hermitage, marks the site where Saint Helier is thought to have lived around 550 AD.
The Governor’s House was built when Sir Walter Raleigh was Governor of Jersey and gave refuge to the future King Charles II during the English Civil War. The Castle is open to the public as a visitor attraction between March and October, but groups have private use of the site once the Castle gates are closed.
