Join Karl Murphy, a multi-disciplinary artist and Learning Officer at Saatchi Gallery, at one of these free letter writing workshops and embrace a romantic relationship with the land, seeing it not as a resource or commodity but as something alive and worthy of care and love. What might shift in our thinking if we wrote to our homeland as we would to a beloved? Craft a ‘love letter’ and offer a small act of poetic resistance, reawakening a sense of reverence for the world around you.
Letters will contribute to Karl’s ongoing project, ‘Love Letters to the Land’, which emerged from his work for the ‘I Extend My Arms’ residency and exhibition, supported by Arthouse Jersey, Jersey Heritage and Arts Council England, and inspired by surrealist artists Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore. Jersey was central to Cahun and Moore’s creative process and is inseparable from their art, with Cahun often pressing their body into the rocks and beaches, merging with the landscape as one.
