Jersey Women and the Vote
Find out more about the stories behind Jersey women receiving the vote in 1919. The talk will focus on the development of women’s suffrage in the Island and some of the individuals who fought for women to have equal political rights. We will discuss differing opinions from the States debate on women and the vote including that of one Deputy who felt that ‘a women of twenty was more susceptible to the subtle arguments of a man’ and another with the opposing view that he ‘deplored the implication that women were not so alert mentally as men.’ The talk will also focus on Caroline Trachy who was the first women to stand for election to the States.
Bring your lunch with you and we will provide tea, coffee and biscuits.
Drop-in from 1pm and be back to work by 2pm.
Short talk starts at 1:15pm.
