JH Members are invited to visit and explore Fisherman’s Cottage, which dates from the 18th century and overlooks the bay of La Grève D’Azette, in a Heritage Lets Open Day, on Sunday, 16 March, between 3:00pm – 5:00pm.

La Caûminne au Pêtcheux was built between 1740 and 1760 as a single-room structure. Excavations uncovered domestic refuse and a clay pipe marked ‘RB’, dating it between 1743 and 1760.

Before 1792, the south-east wall began failing due to its cliffside location, causing the roof to tilt. Around this time, the internal wall was raised to create loft spaces, likely for sleeping or storage. A lean-to shed was added, parts of which remain as a revetment wall.

In the early 19th century, the Board of Ordnance acquired the Cottage for military use. Renovations included lowering the ground floor and installing recycled timbers, including ships’ ribs. In the late 19th century, Purbeck limestone flooring was added.

By the 1950s, the Cottage was abandoned but briefly occupied in WWII. Later, it served as a gardener’s bothy. Left unused for years, it was refurbished as a holiday let in 2011 and completed in 2012.

The Open Day is a ‘drop-in’ event, on a first come basis. Please book your free tickets here on Eventbrite, so that we have an idea of how many people are coming.
